A V5 engine. Ignoring all the other questionable stuff going on with the ad, could a V5 even work? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! here.

Magic!

OK but real talk: $975 is basically, “fuck it,” money. Do it.

It could probably be made to work, but it wouldn’t be a good engine.

I actually recall hearing about a V shaped engine with an odd number of cylinders (it was a V7 I believe). They just counterbalanced the extra cylinder with the crank and I believe they said the 8th cylinder cavity had sensors or something like that.

I couldn’t imagine it being smooth at all

“it wouldn’t be a good engine” is probably quite the understatement. I’d imagine it would be terrible

I’ve been looking into getting a much cheaper car and getting rid of the Accord to save big $$$

I’m sure it could work. Work well... dunno.
EDIT: It’s been done.

That’s actually kind of clever
Seeing how I went from a 4 cylinder to a turbo 5 to a V6, I need a 7 cylinder to follow the order!

Volkswagen made a V5 which was essentially a VR6 with a cylinder missing.
Fun Fact: During WW2 Chrysler made a 30 cylinder WV (5 banks of cylinders) engine with a displacement of 1255cc for use in the M3A4 and M4A4 tanks.

It’s been done before. Volkswagen 2.3L VR5:

yep. VW make a VR5 engine.
also, you need to stop switching between cars so much.

I’m desperately trying to find the engine now. I remember seeing it on TV years ago (probably on SPEED channel) and I believe it was in a pickup. I do not believe it was a production engine.

Didn’t VW make a 5 cylinder version of the VR6? So wouldn’t that technically be a V5?

VW made a VR5, if I’m not mistaken.

I could flip this thing for sooooooo much in a week!

My explorer was running on 5 cylinders for like a month, smooth it was not.

and sort of cheating, ‘cuz it’s really an in-line, mostly, but don’t forget VW:

You could balance it just like you would an I3 or I5. The numbers would just be a bit different because the forces are at angles to each other. For every force acting in one direction you have to have an equal force acting in the opposite direction to cancel the vibration.

Thats amazing and very interesting
I don’t see the point but wow.

Wow I didn’t know that had been done!
![]() 11/17/2016 at 17:17 |

the point is to be able to have a 5 cylinder engine in a space slightly larger than a 4 cylinder

If it wasn’t so far away, I’d buy it as a backup for my V70. Yeah, I know they have a completely different engine but... $975 and it allegedly runs.

Actually I think the VR5 is slightly smaller than a 4-cylinder...
What it was really designed for was mounting in the B5 Passat, which was a longitudinal engine, and couldn’t take anything longer than an inline-4 and still meet crash safety regulations. The VR6 was slightly longer, so lop a cylinder off, and you get the VR5. Because VR engines really behave more like inline engines than V engines, it worked fine. And, above that, they had a conventional 90 degree 2.8 liter V6, so they just needed something in between, until the 1.8T was ready.

GM nearly did a 2.3 liter V5 diesel: http://a350diesel.tripod.com/v5.html
Injection pump mounted where cylinder 6 was supposed to go. For some reason, I suspect it’s a derivative of the 60 degree V6 family, just based on its dimensions. 70 hp @ 4000, 111 lb-ft @ 2400.

For a grand may be worth the trouble. Could be more of a pit if it is poorly maintained. Parts aren’t exactly cheap.

Then again, this car is worth three times as much as the asking price in parts alone.

True. Assuming the majority are salvagable. Save goodies and bring them to the ipd swap meet, see many cool volvos, maybe make some money or at least pay for the trip.
